Backgrounding calves will be focus of meeting

With changing market prices, uncertainty about what to do with calves after weaning is showing up in cattle pastures.

One option is to add value to the calves by feeding them in North Dakota instead of selling them. To address this issue, the North Dakota State University Extension Service is holding a webinar on the cattle market outlook and a series of local seminars on feeding and budgeting.

A local meeting about backgrounding calves is scheduled for 1p.m. Oct. 27 at 1 p.m., in the McIntosh County Courthouse in Ashley.

"While cattle prices are low, compared with recent years, the price of feed has dropped also," says Karl Hoppe, livestock specialist at the NDSU Carrington Research Extension Center.

"Cattle feeding is a margin business. If the cost of gain is low enough, feeding calves can be worthwhile."
