Historic significance

The selection of the Zeeland City Hall to the National Register of Historic Places will be celebrated this weekend.

A program is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the hall.

Construction was a Works Progress Administration project in 1936. The one-story Colonial Revival style building is 58 feet-by-98 feet, with a bell tower. Although it shows some signs of its age, it has most of its original features.

Joyce Scherr, a local historian, and Dr. Tom Isern, professor of history and university distinguished professor at N.D. State University, Fargo, were instrumental in getting the national distinction for the historic hall.

Featured speakers at the event will be Kyle “Bubba” Schweigert and Dr. Isern.

Schweigert is a Zeeland native and the grandson of John Schweigert, the foreman for the WPA project. He is head football coach at the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.

Germans from Russia displays will also be available for review.

A free lunch of knoepfle and sausage will be served at noon at the hall.
