On May 2, 2018, eighteen 3rd and 4th grade students from McIntosh County participated in the 21st Annual Spring Spelling Bee at the McIntosh County Court House in Ashley.

The competition involves students in written, oral, vocabulary testing followed by an "Old Fashioned Spelldown". The Champion Speller was Berkley Franz, son of Rocky and Kelly Brown of Wishek. The runner-up was Kitana Martel, daughter of Mike and Mary Martel of Ashley, and the "Old Fashioned Spelldown" champ was Haley Kaseman, daughter of Dale and Jennifer Kaseman of Ashley.
